| Sheila Rae Vitale, 80, passed away July 12, 2010, after a long battle with cancer. Born Velma Louise Valentine, the daughter of Mary Piringer and William E. Valentine, Dec. 6, 1929 in Los Angeles, she took the stage name Sheila Rae, on her way to becoming a longtime exotic dancer. Her outgoing personality and charm helped Sheila to become a star performer in the world of burlesque. From 1946 to 1971 she was a feature attraction who worked in clubs and theaters all over the United States, Europe and Canada. Sheila was sometimes billed "The Hungarian Bombshell" and worked hard at her craft. With beautiful costumes, perfected dance routines, comedy and grace, Sheila gave her audience a taste of old Hollywood glamour - an art that has seen a resurgence with the pop artists of today. As a legend in burlesque she played a part in forever changing the role of women on the American stage and the place of women in society for years to come. An Oxnard resident since 1965, Sheila dearly loved her family, friends and giving back to the community. After a 25-year career in burlesque she went back to school to earn her nursing assistant certification and then dedicated her life to caring for the elderly. She especially enjoyed making beautiful Christmas ornaments for her loved ones every year. But her heart always belonged to the stage and she treasured reunions with performers from her earlier days. That group of women, all of whom have been friends for many years, often attended reunions and organized gatherings. Everyone who knew Sheila knew how much she loved to laugh, reminisce, tell stories and have a wonderful time. She was a true entertainer and will be greatly missed by all who loved and cared for her. She is survived by her beloved son, William Patterson and his wife Tammy Patterson, of Oxnard; grandchildren, Christopher Patterson, Page Courtney Patterson, of Oxnard; Ashley Patterson and great-grandchildren, Seth William Holland and Kaydence Holland, of Missouri. She is also survived by her adopted daughter, Cynthia Marie Jojola, and her husband, Philip David Jojola; grandsons, Andrew David Jojola, Christopher Steven Jojola, Michael Loren Jojola, and Matthew Lee Jojola, of Florida; and her best friend for over 40 years, Eleanor Oliver, of Oxnard. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 22 at Funeraria De Angel Conrad-Carroll Mortuary in Oxnard. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 23, at Inglewood Memorial Park Cemetery, 720 E. Florence Ave, Inglewood, Lake plot #299. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to The Burlesque Hall of Fame, PO Box 1437, Las Vegas, NV 89125 or The Golden Days of Burlesque Historical Society, a Non-Profit Organization dedicated to preserving the golden days of burlesque history.
